Combined Smart Charging: Optimizing flexibility in low voltage grid

The Flexpower Amsterdam project is investigating whether the speed of charging electric cars can be adjusted to the availability of energy on the electricity grid. 126 charging points are equipped with software that allows the available charging speed to be shifted between charging stations during the day, depending on the number of cars charging at the same time. Dr. Ir. Marisca Zweistra from Elaad will tell us all about the Flexpower project.

About Marisca Zweistra

Dr. ir. Marisca Zweistra is project and programme manager Smart Charging at ElaadNL. Knowledge and innovation centre ElaadNL is researching and testing the possibilities for Smart Charging: smart and sustainable charging of electric cars. ElaadNL is an initiative of the joint Dutch grid operators. Zweistra has knowledge of Open Data, open source, privacy and energy legislation and is an active member of the Smart Charging Working Group of the National Charging Infrastructure Agenda. Zweistra is, among other things, project leader of Flexpower Amsterdam and of the multi-year cooperation project SmoothEMS with Gridshield.

About Flexpower

The Flexpower Amsterdam project is investigating whether the speed of charging electric cars can be adjusted to the availability of energy on the electricity grid. 126 charging points are equipped with software that allows the available charging speed to be shifted between charging stations during the day, depending on the number of cars charging at the same time. Because we can shift the speed between charging points, the possibility arises to assign each charging station a much lower base charging speed than in the regular system, which is very favorable for the number of charging stations that are possible in a neighborhood. The total load becomes very predictable by smart charging in this way. It also creates the possibility to make more power available on top of the base speed at certain times of the day. Charging is done by dividing the charging speed at normal speed at times when few cars charge at the same time and /or when there is a lot of local generation, and slower when many cars charge at the same time without extra generation being available.
